5 Reasons for Internet Marketing Failure
If you read the sales pages for products in the make money online niche, you’d get the impression that it’s really easy to be a successful online marketer if you just buy their product and do what they say. I’ve yet to see a product that produced instant success, but that’s a tried-and-true sales pitch that never fails to produce sales. Unfortunately, the sad truth is that most people who try to make money online fail, and that number probably approaches 90%. Why is the failure rate so high? In this post, I’ll look at five reasons why most marketers fail to produce any kind of reasonable income, despite having all of the tools they need at hand.
I’ve mentioned before that all successful online businesses use basically the same things to succeed:
- Find a marketing niche
- Find a related product to sell
- Build a blog or Website
- Add content
- Attract visitors to your site
- Make money when they buy the product
If that’s all it takes, why do so many people fail to see results? Below I’ll list five reasons that seem to be common to failure.
5 Reasons for Internet Marketing Failure
While there are many reasons that Internet marketers fail, the ones listed below are probably the most common.
Doing Nothing – Since this one is probably the most common reason for failure, I’ll list it first. This might seem obvious, but if you’re going to succeed in making money online, you first have to actually do something. Reading about a great idea on a marketing forum or buying somebody’s “proven moneymaking system” isn’t going to do anything for you if you read it and file it away. In any business endeavor, it’s going to occasionally be necessary to take a few risks. That’s the case in online marketing, too, and if you fail to take action, due to fear or anything else, you’re going to find yourself in the same boat as everyone else – not earning any money.
Distraction – This one’s equally common, especially for people who are either members of an online marketing forum or those who are on a lot of mailing lists of prominent Internet marketers. There are always new products that come along that claim to show you the secret of success and some people seemingly buy them all without ever putting any of them to work. It’s not that they don’t intend to, it’s that they’re too distracted by today’s new “must have” product to put the one they bought just yesterday to use. In the end, you wind up with a hard drive full of expensive books and software products and you have nothing to show for it because you never got around to doing anything.
Lack of Patience – This one’s common, too. Everyone wants instant results anytime they engage in any online work. You’re fighting the search engines on this one; while they used to accept a huge Website appearing overnight and give it the same credibility as one that’s been around for years, that no longer happens. It takes time to build a business, see it gain credibility from the search engines, and see it succeed. If you have a big budget, you can spend a lot of money on pay per click advertising, but even that requires patience, as most advertising campaigns don’t work without a lot of fine tuning and spending of money. When you decide to engage in any kind of online business, you simply have to accept that it’s likely going to take quite a bit of time to become successful. You can fine tune it in the meantime and add more content and do things to improve it, but success isn’t going to be instant. The sooner you realize that, the better off you’ll be.
Unrealistic Goals – The marketers who write sales copy are largely to blame for this; I can’t tell you how many moneymaking courses, books and products I’ve seen over the years with the word “millionaire” in the title. The same applies to “wealth” or “riches.” It’s possible to earn a living online and it’s even possible to earn a good one. There are lots of marketers earning six figure incomes and when you get right down to it, that only means bringing in about $275 per day. Lots of marketers are capable of doing that and it’s a worthwhile goal. Earning millions? That’s not likely, and for 99% of the people out there, it’s not even possible. Yet every single product that comes along that promises “wealth”, “riches” or “millions” seems to do well, as people are dazzled by the promise of earning truckloads of money without doing any work.
Instead of trying to get wealthy, why not try to earn a living instead? No matter what you earn, you’re still going to be happier doing it for yourself than you are working at a 9 to 5 job for someone else. Learn to set realistic expectations, and you’ll find that you’re much more likely to achieve them.
Traffic – Traffic remains the single biggest problem for Internet marketers. Your best ideas or Website are going to be ignored if you don’t have visitors to your site. The easiest way to get traffic coming to you is to use good search engine optimization (SEO) techniques, but these are tedious and frankly, not a lot of fun. You’ll also have to spend time getting links to your site from elsewhere, and perhaps spend some time building a page on Facebook or some other social media site. It isn’t fun, and it is work, but working on traffic is the part of the job that really matters. If you’re going to jump into the make money online game, you’re going to have to accept that you’re going to spend a lot of time trying to get traffic to your site. It is what it is; get used to it.
All of these problems are real and are quite common. If you fall victim to any of them, you’re likely to fail online. That doesn’t mean they can’t be overcome, but you need to be aware of them before you can determine if they’re holding you back.
