Internet Marketing – Avoid Shiny Object Syndrome
Internet marketing in general, and affiliate marketing in particular, are popular ways of making money online. There are lots of ways to do it, but some work better than others. There are, however, some tried-and-true methods for making money online that do work, have always worked, and will likely continue to work for the foreseeable future.
The problem is that a lot of would-be Internet marketers tend to overlook the obvious things that do work, because they’re not fancy and they aren’t fast, and they tend to take a lot of time to work. Instead of working with those methods that are proven to work, they try to get rich quickly by following every new “shiny object” that pops up in the marketplace.
What do I mean by “shiny object?”
Internet Marketing Shortcuts
A “shiny object” is anything that distracts you from what you should be doing – building a site the right way, taking your time to make sure that it has good, effective content, and finding one good thing to promote and making sure that you promote it well. Instead of doing that, many affiliate marketers lurk at places like the Warrior Forum, where the Warrior Special Offers area offers lots of shiny objects.
At the Warrior Special Offers forum, marketers offer their plans for making money at a reduced price for site members. You’ll literally see thousands of courses, ebooks, and software products for sale there, all being sold with hype-filled pages that talk about how you’ll earn hundreds or even thousands of dollars overnight using somebody’s “can’t miss” system, offered to at a special price for a limited time only.
Right now, I’m looking over a few of the products offered for sale there. Right now, these include:
“PPC Beast” – Get 26,000 visitors per month!
Dominate Product Creation in 7 Days
My Secret $100/Day System
How to Build a Mailing List of 7000 in 7 Days
Free Unlimited Traffic!
Be Successful on Fiverr in 14 Days
…and so on. There are currently more than twenty five thousand products offered for sale there, with dozens added daily. Most of them offer some sort of information product that will allow you to make money quickly using some “new” or “secret” technique, or perhaps by using some “loophole” that the product creator has found.
These courses are generally quite inexpensive, and can often be purchased for less than $20. Of course, you might (and should!) be wondering – if the guy who created this course is earning hundreds or thousands of dollars per day, why are they selling their method for $9?
There are several things going on in your average Warrior Special Offer, or WSO:
The seller is creating a mailing list – Often, these sellers have multiple products for sale, and by getting you to buy just one, they’ll get you on their mailing list where they can then send you offers for every other product they create. They might not make much money by selling you something for $9, but if you buy four or five courses from them, it adds up.
The seller has an upsell – this is common; you buy the inexpensive product, only to discover an upsell product for a substantially higher price that will “take you to the next level.” So they talked you into buying the $9 product, only to try to sell you another one for $47 or $97 or $497 or whatever.
There are literally thousands of buyers who find themselves regularly looking over the WSO forum in hopes of finding that “shiny object” that will allow them to make big bucks really quickly. There are plenty of people who buy several of these offers every week, just trying to find that “one thing” that works.
None of them ever do. Here’s why:
Some of these products used to work, but don’t anymore. Things change quickly on the Internet, and sometimes, things stop working overnight. Perhaps the search engines no longer like the kinds of Websites the product creator was building, or perhaps the market for that type of site became saturated. When you’re doing something that works and it stops working, the next step in making money from it is to sell the idea to others, even if it doesn’t work anymore.
The creator doesn’t know if the product works or not, because he’s in the business of selling products. Some of the creators of these WSOs don’t do anything but create WSOs. One author seemingly has a new ebook out every month about how to make money with Fiverr. If he’s creating a new book about making money on Fiverr every month, how much time could he possibly have to actually make money on Fiverr?
If you’re going to make money online in Internet marketing, you can’t be trying something new every week. Most of these products and courses don’t work and never did. Their only objective was to get $9 out of your pocket. Chasing the next “shiny object” at the Warrior Forum or anywhere else is a waste of time, because you’re looking at tired ideas that are either saturated or were simply bad ideas in the first place.
A better idea for Internet marketing is one that has stood the test of time. It has worked for years, and it’s going to continue to work for years to come because it’s solid:
- Find a marketing niche
- Find a related product to sell
- Build a blog or Website
- Add content
- Attract visitors to your site
- Make money when they buy the product
This isn’t a system for affiliate marketers; this is a system that every successful Website that sells something uses. Find a niche. Find a related product. Build a site about it with interesting, compelling content. Sell.
It doesn’t change. It doesn’t have to. It works with Amazon and just about any other Website that sells anything. Find something good. Give people a reason to want to buy it. Provide content and value.
