internet marketing guruIf you’re trying to make money online and you’re spending any time on marketing forums or if you’re on the mailing list of any marketers, you’re going to encounter the word “guru” a lot.  There are a handful of guys (they’re all men) in the world of Internet marketing that people seem to revere for their success and everyone refers to them as Internet marketing gurus.

Who are these Internet marketing gurus?  There’s a long list, but if you spend enough time in the work online from home niche, you’ll eventually encounter names like these:

  • Eben Pagan
  • Ryan Deiss
  • John Chow
  • Frank Kern
  • Mike Filsaime
  • Anik Singal
  • Ewen Chia
  • Tellman Knudson
  • Yanik Silver

Internet marketing gurus

All of these guys are quite successful Internet marketers.  All of them have created very expensive training courses that they sell to people who want to make money online. All of them have sold millions of dollars worth of their products.  But what makes them “Internet marketing gurus?”  Do these Internet marketing gurus actually know anything that the tens of thousands of other marketers in the business don’t know?

The reason that I bring this up is because I received a message a couple of weeks ago from a fellow marketer by the name of Bill.  Bill’s a good guy and has a Website that I find useful, so I signed up for his mailing list.  In this particular message, Bill told me that a new training course by Anik Singal was coming out soon, and that it was going to be a big deal.  I’m familiar with Anik Singal; he’s known, of course, as one of the big Internet marketing gurus.

Bill works with marketers himself, so he wasn’t trying to sell me on the course, but was instead trying to persuade me to promote it myself as an affiliate.  He pointed out that the commissions are huge, that I’d make $1500 per sale and that there was a prize of a brand new Maserati sports car for the affiliate who makes the most sales.

What really got my attention was this:

Not only that but you’ll be able to see how the best internet marketers will promote Anik’s product. People like:

  • Jeff Johnson
  • Frank Kern
  • Mike Filsaime
  • Eben Pagan
  • Andy Jenkins
  • Jeff Walker

Ah, the Internet marketing gurus are promoting this product, so that means that it must be a really big deal.  After all, these Internet marketing gurus are busy being gurus, and for them to take time out from their guruing to promote this product must represent some sort of validation for the product, right?   The course must be great, otherwise, why would these Internet marketing gurus waste their time on a junk product?

Actually, there are two good reasons for these Internet marketing gurus to devote their time to a junk product:

1. These Internet marketing gurus have huge mailing lists with tens of thousands of people on them.
2. The commission for this product is $1500 per sale.

These Internet marketing gurus are promoting this training course not necessarily because it’s good, but because they can send out a few email messages and rake in tens of thousands of dollars in commissions in exchange for doing very little work.

You and I, on the other hand, will not benefit one bit from seeing how the “best marketers” will promote this course because we don’t have what these Internet marketing gurus have:

1. A gigantic mailing list.
2. Access to all of the other Internet marketing gurus, and by extension, access to their mailing lists.

Internet marketing gurusHow Internet Marketing Gurus Make Money

These Internet marketing gurus have all created expensive training courses (and sometimes in-person, live seminars) that sell for anywhere from $3000-$10,000.  In these courses, the Internet marketing gurus are going to show you how to make money online and most people assume that they’re going to show you how they do it themselves.  They don’t teach that, however, because what they’re doing themselves is difficult, if not impossible, for someone new to the business to do.

Why?  Because they’re working together.  They are effectively a cartel.  They’re in; you’re out.

Every now and again, one of these Internet marketing gurus will announce that they’re coming out with a new course and this course is going to change the face of Internet marketing.  When this happens, all of the Internet marketing gurus will promote it heavily.  In all likelihood, there’s nothing new about the course, and it’s probably just a series of videos that were made at a live seminar.  The videos will typically feature lectures from one or more of the gurus on the lists above, so they’re going to “share what they know.”

What they know, however, is that the secret to selling millions of dollars worth of products online is not to buy one of their training courses; it’s to have a huge mailing list and to be really good friends with all of the other Internet marketing gurus.  The Internet marketing gurus work together and they promote each others’ products, and they all just share the big pot of commissions.  When this new training course is finished with its big launch, we’ll probably find that 90% of all the commissions went to fewer than ten marketers, with the hundreds of other people who promoted the course sharing the rest.  One of those guys is going to get the Maserati, too.

Why would only a handful of people make all the money?  Because between them, they’ve got pretty much everyone who might be interested in that training course on their mailing list.  People will buy the course from them, rather than you, because these guys are “gurus.”

circular In the end, it’s all a circle, and the Internet marketing gurus and the expensive courses validate each others’ value:

How do we know these guys are gurus?  Because they make big bucks promoting expensive training courses!

How do we know the expensive training courses are any good?  Because all of the big gurus are promoting them!

There’s a lot of money to be made in Internet marketing and a big part of that is having and maintaining a mailing list.  Any marketer can build a mailing list, and given enough time, it’s possible to profit from it.  What isn’t easily duplicated is the insider knowledge these guys get from working with one another.  They’re not going to share that, and they’re certainly not going to share that with people who buy their training courses.

I’ve seen some of their courses, and they’re relatively unremarkable.  They offer basic marketing information – build a Website.  Capture email addresses.  Send them messages with marketing tips.  Send them messages with affiliate links so you can earn a commission.  Aside from that, there are lots of motivational speeches, telling you that the real secret to making money online is to “think outside of the box” or “work hard.”  Motivation is nice, but it’s process that earns the money.  Do this + this + this and you get $$.  That’s what you want for $3000.

Yes, those things help.  You know what else helps?  Come up with a $3000 training product and get people who have 100,000 names on their mailing list to promote it in exchange for $1500 per sale in commissions.

The bottom line:  Do these guys know more than anyone else?  No.  Do they know enough to make a lot of money online?  Yes.  Are they going to share that information with you if you buy their courses for $3000?  Unlikely.

Do all of these Internet marketing gurus work together?  No, but they have a tendency to work in groups.  When one of the names on this list is promoting a high ticket item, you can bet the others will, too.

There are lots of ways to learn how to make money online.  If you want to work online from home, you can learn how to do that without spending thousands of dollars you probably can’t spare on one of these courses from the Internet marketing gurus.
