Making Money Online Isn’t Hard Anymore
This may come as a shock to a lot of people, but in many ways, it’s easier making money online than it has ever been before. Sure, the search engines have gotten a lot more particular about what they’ll put in their indexes and where they’ll rank sites that are built to make money online, but that’s one of the few areas in the making money online niche that has suffered over the years. In a lot of other ways, things are much simpler than they’ve ever been, and new developments make it easier to work online from home than ever before.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not suggesting that it’s necessarily easy making money online. It’s work, just as it would be to do anything else for a living. These days, however, a lot of tasks that used to be quite difficult are now simple enough that even a novice can tackle them. The great thing about this is that it’s not possible for just about anyone to engage in Internet marketing, where it was once an area that was pretty much limited to those with advanced technical or computer skills. In addition, the costs of many things related to making money online have dropped over the years, lowering the barriers to entry and making it easier for people with modest amounts of money to invest to get started creating an online business.
Making Money Online Isn’t Expensive Anymore
Let’s go back a few years to the late 1990s, when I first started trying to make money online. Back then, the cost of buying a domain name was much higher than it is today. At that time, a domain name cost $35 per year, with a two year minimum. Adjusted for inflation, that works out to about $100 today. On the other hand, today, you can register a top-level domain name for about $10 per year, with only a one-year minimum. That makes it pretty easy and affordable to buy a domain name on a lark, and if you decide later that you’re no longer interested in making money online, you’re only out a small amount of money.
Web hosting has become much more affordable over the years, as well. It used to cost as much as $1000 per year to have a Website hosted, as there weren’t many companies that provided the service and because they were all using proprietary operating systems with complex licensing structures. Today, with most Web hosting companies using the open source Linux operating systems on their servers and with computer hardware continuing to get cheaper by the day, Web hosting has become quite inexpensive and is no longer an obstacle to anyone who wants to work online from home. It’s possible to have a Website hosted for less than $5 per month and in some cases, it’s even possible get free Web hosting.
Creating Websites is a lot easier and less expensive than it used to be. In the mid-1990s, if you wanted to create a Website, you needed to buy a bunch of books about coding in HTML and then you had to code the pages manually with a text editor. That was followed in the late 1990s by a number of WYSIWYG HTML editors, such as NetObjects Fusion, Microsoft Front Page, Macromedia (later Adobe) Dreamweaver, and the like. Still, these software packages cost several hundred dollars to buy and came with a steep learning curve. Today, open-source software packages such as WordPress make it easy for anyone, even a newbie, to create a professional-looking Website in just a matter of minutes. There are thousands of free templates and plugins that allow you to create a blog, of a fully-functional online store or an affiliate marketing site that looks as though you paid thousands of dollars for it, and you can do it for free.
There are more moneymaking opportunities online now than ever before, too. In the late 1990s, affiliate programs were relatively rare. Today, there are tens of thousands of companies that have affiliate programs, including some of the biggest companies on the Internet, such as Amazon and eBay. Practically every product that you can buy online has an affiliate program associated with it, making it easy to find something that interests you to promote. If you’re more interested in creating products of your own or selling directly, you can always list merchandise on eBay or Amazon, or write books for the Amazon Kindle, or provide services for hire at sites such as Elance or Fiverr.
Other opportunities for making money online that are lucrative today that didn’t exist a few years ago are such sites as YouTube, where you can post your own videos and share in the advertising revenue from the site, or traditional blogging, where you can have Adsense or other types of ads on your site that generate revenue from visitors who simply happen by.
Even learning how to make money online has become easier. Back before most of the affiliate programs and other tools existed, it was hard to figure out how to make money online. There were a few books about it, but that was about it. Today, there are entire forums devoted to making money online, such as the Warrior Forum, or countless others. In fact, I just did a search for “make money online forum” and Bing returned sixty one million results.
Making Money Online Still Has Problems
Of course, having all of that information available doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s organized in a useful fashion. While there’s a ton of useful information on the Warrior Forum, for instance, it’s all pretty randomly structured and not organized in a way that would make it easy for a newbie or a beginner to learn about online marketing in a step by step plan. Fortunately, there are now a number of programs available with that sort of training, and a few of them, like Wealthy Affiliate, are free. While many of these programs offer a free trial or a sample of the available course material, you can sign up for Wealthy Affiliate for free and receive training, help, and even free Web hosting.
Years ago, making money online was hard to learn about, expensive to do, and difficult for all but serious programmer types. Today, it’s easier than ever, with better tools, lower costs, and greater opportunities. It’s a good time to be making money online.
