It’s amazing how many sites like this are popping up on a daily basis, but the latest entry in the “do almost nothing for money!” sweepstakes is a site called Stat of News.  This site offers to pay you $7 for reading a news article, and you can read 35 articles per day.  Not only that, but if you refer people to the Stat of News site, they’ll pay you a portion of their earnings, too.  Sounds great, unless Stat of News is a scam.  Is it?  Read our full Stat of News review below.

stat of news reviewThere’s no shortage of people who want to make money online, and for years, people have been claiming to be able to make a lot of money online by taking paid surveys or doing other tasks that require relatively little time and effort.  Since there are lots of people who are interested in making money without doing a whole lot of work for it, sites like Stat of News are flourishing.  So, how does Stat of News work?  Is it worthwhile?

Stat of News Overview

It’s pretty easy to sign up for Stat of News; all you have to do is provide an email address and a password.  If you want to get paid, via PayPal, Payza or Scrill, you’ll also have to provide your account number or email address.  Once you’ve filled out the simple form, you click the “Read News” link, and it will show you a list of headlines.   You click the link for the headline of your choice, and you’ll be shown a short 2-3 sentence snippet of the article.  Then you have to answer a simple math question, such as “How much is 10+30?” to prove that you’re not a robot.   Once you have done this, you’ll have $7 in your account.  In most cases, this entire process should take about 15 seconds, and then you can do it again.

In fact, you can do this 35 times per day, which will net you $245 daily.  You can increase your earnings by referring friends.  If you refer a friend using the provided link, you’ll get $35 for getting them to sign up, plus 15% of their earnings, with no limit.  Sounds pretty good.  In fact, it sounds too good to be true.  What’s really happening?

Stat of News Red Flags

It’s hard to tell exactly what’s happening with Stat of News, but their claim that the company was founded in New York City in 2014 is certainly bogus.  The site is registered in Russia, and probably by the same people who have created Up Survey, Survey Double, All News Round, and a few other sites.  As I write this, the site was registered just yesterday.  That’s pretty funny, since there’s a message on their home page that says “The number of our partners for one month has increased in 10 times. Thanks for being with us!”

stat of news scamAnother issue is that there’s no provision for canceling your account.  Don’t want to do it anymore?  Sorry, your account seems to be permanent.

Since these sites seem to be owned by the same people, and since we already know that Up Survey will not pay people, it seems pretty likely that Stat of News isn’t going to pay people either.

OK, so what is going on with Stat of News?

It’s hard to say, but we know this much – there isn’t any news agency that’s going to pay people to read two or three sentences of a news article, so there’s no direct way for Stat of News to make any money from having you read news clips.  That means that there’s no reason for them to pay you to read them.  That means that there must be something else going on.

stat of news cashFor starters, it’s possible that Stat of News is simply harvesting email addresses.  Russia is the Spam Capitol of the World, and they’re always looking for good, working email addresses.  That might be why they’re strongly suggesting that you promote the site on Facebook.  They know they’ll get email addresses from thousands or even millions of suckers, and those email addresses will likely be from a relatively young demographic group that likes to spend money.  It’s an easy way to get a lot of email addresses quickly, which means you’ll likely be seeing a lot of unwanted email very soon.

stat of news CAPTCHAIt’s also possible that Stat of News is tricking you into doing work for them.  You have to answer a short math problem in order to get credit for reading an article.  There are lots of people who use automated software to do things on the Internet, and that software isn’t always very good at answering CAPTCHA challenges, such as the math question.  There are several services that charge money to break CAPTCHA challenges in bulk, but these services have to pay their employees.  On the other hand, if they can get you to do it for free, they’ll save money in payroll costs.

A quick glance at the code for one of those math questions shows this:

<a name="task"></a>
<form action="/" method="post" class="getBonusForm">
    13 + 30 = <input type="text" name="work_code" class="rinp shot" />
    <input type="submit" class="btn btn-info" name="work_ok" value="ok" />
    <input type="hidden" name="work_id" value="387" />

The “work” is the key there; Stat of News is obviously using this site for something productive.  It’s also the exact same code we’ve seen on other similar sites.  Our guess is that Stat of News is harvesting your email address and putting you to work and asking you to ask your friends to work for them for free.
