Turnkey Systems – Why They Don’t Work

The Folly of Turnkey Systems

If you’re active in the make money online niche, you’ll see a lot of products offered for sale that claim that everything is “done for you” or that they’re “completely turnkey.”  These money making systems are marketed primarily to newbies who have little experience in the work online from home field and who might be overwhelmed by how much they need to know to be successful Internet marketers.

turnkey systemsFor them, turnkey systems seem to offer a great opportunity, as the sellers promise a “plug and play system” that’s supposed to start making money just minutes after the buyer makes her purchase.  While turnkey systems certainly sound appealing, they do have their problems, and there are a number of reasons why anyone who is serious about trying to make money online would do well to avoid them.

What’s Wrong With Turnkey Systems?

There’s nothing wrong with turnkey systems, at least in theory.  Many brick and mortar franchises are sold that way.  If you buy a Subway sandwich shop or a McDonald’s franchise, you’re pretty much just handed the keys and you’re ready to go.  They company has already determined that you’re in a relatively competition-free area, or they wouldn’t have agreed to sell the franchise to you in the first place.  If you’re lucky enough to have your Subway shop located in a Wal-Mart store, for instance, you pretty much just need to open the door and people will come rushing in, cash in hand.

While those kinds of turnkey systems work well in the brick and mortar world, they don’t work well at all in the world of Internet marketing.  If you buy some plug and play money making system, you’re likely to find yourself a bit poorer for it.  That’s pretty much all you’re going to get out of the deal.

Here are a few reasons why:

plug and play system

Plug and play money making? No.

Lack of a unique domain name – A lot of these turnkey systems work like this:  You buy a Website from a seller who has created the site, as well as a complete sales funnel and autoresponder system for you.  They might even offer to host the site for you on their own Webservers.  All you need to do, they’ll tell you, is send traffic to the site, and you’ll make money.  These types of turnkey systems are often quite impressive, with attractive graphics and low priced, mid priced and high priced products that are offered to buyers in sequence.  The autoresponder will allow you to build a mailing list so you can sell to them again in the future.

So what’s the problem with this?  These kinds of turnkey systems, a few of which I’ve reviewed here, suffer from a lack of a unique domain name.  If you buy a site from GetRichNow.com, your hosted site might have a domain name such as GetRichNow.com/12345.  These kinds of sites are ignored by the major search engines, such as Google and Bing, as they’re not viewed as independent Websites. Instead, they’re viewed as pages on the parent Website.  So “your” site isn’t regarded as a site at all by Google; it’s just regarded as one of many pages on the site from which you bought the product.  As such, your site isn’t likely to rank well in the search engines.

avoid duplicate contentDuplicate content – This is an offshoot of the point above.  When you buy turnkey systems that promise “done for you” Websites, chances are good that none of the content on the site’s pages will be unique.  Search engines don’t care for duplicate content; they’ll list the first site to contain a piece of content in their index, but subsequent pages containing the same content will likely be ignored, making it impossible for your site to draw any traffic from search engines at all.

Making matters worse is that the terms of sale for many of these turnkey systems often expressly prohibit changing the content at all!  The fine print often requires you to keep the content exactly the same, which makes it all the more difficult to make your site stand out.

Promotion and advertising problems – What happens with such turnkey systems is that you’re going to be buying one of hundreds or even thousands of sites that are absolutely identical to one another.  Then you’ll be put in the position of having to somehow make your own site stand out in a field of identical sites.

Any experienced marketer will tell you that 90% of all of the work done in building a successful online business is attracting visitors to your site.  You can have the world’s best Website, but if no one knows about it, you’re going to be stuck with a site that makes no money.  It’s difficult, but not impossible to build a site and draw traffic to it. It’s work, but if you build your site well, with unique, compelling content and a good product to sell, you will attract visitors and you will be successful.

On the other hand, if you invest in turnkey systems that have the same graphics as everyone else who bought that system and which contains the same content as the sites of everyone else who bought that system, your job is now even more difficult than it would have been had you simply built a Website from scratch.  Most methods of attracting visitors to such turnkey systems won’t work, and that means that the only option left to you is buying traffic.

Buying traffic is a method that can work, but it’s not for newbies.  The learning curve is steep and if you’re in a competitive niche, mistakes can be expensive.  It’s easy to blow through a budget of hundreds or even thousands of dollars in a matter of hours if you set up your advertising campaign incorrectly.

Turnkey Systems Summary

Turnkey systems certainly sound appealing and that’s why they often sell well.  People like the idea of having a “done for you” money making system that requires no technical knowledge, no experience and no idea of how to sell anything.  They’re just sold on the idea of buying a “plug and play” system that they’re told will make money right away.  Unfortunately, they never work that way and the buyers always lose money.

A better option is to build your own site and sell and market products yourself, rather than investing in someone’s “done for you” solution.  Rather than invest in turnkey systems, why not join a community like Wealthy Affiliate?  There, you can learn everything you need to know about building your own site that has good content, unique graphics, and a compelling product.  You’ll see better results that way.

Turnkey systems are designed for suckers.  Don’t be one.
