The Wealthy Affiliate is one of a number of programs designed to help people make money online.  They offer training, Web hosting and what they say are the four steps to making money.  They’ve been around a while, and a lot of people seem to promote them.  Is Wealthy Affiliate a scam, or is it the real deal?  Read on for our full Wealthy Affiliate review.

wealthy affiliate reviewMost products designed to help people make money online are “systems” that give you a set of instructions to follow to make money in some precise way.  “Do this on Facebook, do this on Fiverr, and watch the money roll in”, is how many of them work.  Wealthy Affiliate is different; it’s a membership site that provides training, Website building tools and even Web hosting.  If you follow all of their steps, they say you’ll make money.  You can even join Wealthy Affiliate for free.

Wealthy Affiliate Overview

Joining Wealthy Affiliate is certainly easy, and you can sign up for free.  Just sign up with a username, an email address and a password, and you’re ready to go and you’ll be staring at the dashboard.   The Wealthy Affiliate program is based on four simple steps designed to get you in business and making money:

  • Choose an Interest
  • Build a Website
  • Attract Visitors
  • Earn Revenue

The Wealthy Affiliate training program is designed to help you learn how to do these things as well as how to maximize your earnings potential.  The training is on a step by step basis, and there is a live chat option available at any time to get you the help that you need.  You’ll be able to monitor your progress as you go through the program, learning along the way how Websites work, how affiliate marketing works, and how to draw traffic to your Websites.  Every article and module has a discussion section, so you can see the comments that others have recently made about whatever you’re working on.  The creators of Wealthy Affiliate, Kyle and Carson, never seem to be far away, and it’s easy to contact them or follow their activities.

wa_bannerWealthy Affiliate seems to thrive on interaction among members, so you’ll be promoted to upload a picture and update your profile so that you can easily exchange information with others, allowing you to learn more easily.  The training program for a free membership consists of ten modules, and each includes text, videos, and a set of tasks that you should complete before going on to the next module.  You’ll have the ability to create a Website using either your own domain, or a subdomain of the main Wealthy Affiliate site.  They’ll even host the site for you, which makes it quite easy to get started.

These are all good things, and the Wealthy Affiliate is a good program.  Kyle and Carson are very “hands on” as owners, and you’ll hear from them regularly as a member.  You can even contact them directly.

Of course, no program is perfect, and for all of its good points, Wealthy Affiliates does have a few minor drawbacks.

For free members, training and access to tools are somewhat limited.  Their free training consists of ten modules, with their additional modules being available only to paid members.  Their keyword tool limits the number of searches you can make.  You can only host two Websites there, as opposed to unlimited Websites with the paid version, and your support options are limited in the starter version.  In addition, the very valuable user forum is only available for premium members.  On the other hand, the free program does give you a good overview of what you’ll get when you decide to upgrade to the paid Premium membership.

The paid Wealthy Affiliate membership offers one on one coaching, access to the member forum, hosting for unlimited Websites, better site security, better support, and a lot more training.  The hosting for unlimited Websites is a feature that by itself justifies the paid membership.  Hosting is expensive; at Wealthy Affiliate, it’s simply another feature of the program.

On the other hand, you can actually make money with Wealthy Affiliate as a free, or Starter member, with their “earn while you learn” program.   You can learn about affiliate marketing and then, if you choose, make money by promoting Wealthy Affiliate itself.  Yes, they do pay commissions to Starter members, though the commissions are higher for Premium members, which is another advantage of upgrading.  In fact, with a Premium membership, you can even earn commissions when you refer free members.

Wealthy Affiliate Conclusion

wealthy affiliate- thumbs upFull disclosure:  I’m a Premium member of Wealthy Affiliate, and I think it’s a terrific program.  They’ve taken a good approach to teaching people how to make money online, and there’s lots of information to learn there, even if you just get a free membership.  On the downside, the free membership lacks a lot of features that are available in the Premium membership and by including the word “wealthy” in the name, they’re overselling the product.  Still, the free membership does give you a good taste of what’s available if you want to upgrade.  Plus, lots of people have had success with Wealthy Affiliate, and many of them are happy to provide helpful advice.

Perhaps the best thing about Wealthy Affiliate is the community.  While there is a standalone forum, each page on the site has a section for comments from other members, giving you insight into what longtime members have to say about particular aspects of the training.  That’s useful; while you’re learning, you’re getting feedback from other members.

Is Wealthy Affiliate a scam?  No, it’s a good program and a legitimate one.  I’ll recommend it, and in fact, I’m a Wealthy Affiliate member myself.

  1. Hey,
If I choose just one niche,no matter howsoever I try to write as many as possible, someday I would be left with no more information about that particular niche.
So how is just one niche going to profit me?Can I combine inter related niches so that I can have much more info?

    • You should choose a niche with a lot of available information. If you pick a niche where there isn’t much to write about, there also likely aren’t a lot of people interested in that niche, and that may limit the number of visitors to your site as well as how much you can earn.

  2. Charlie,
Would it be ok if I insert Affiliate links of ebay products in between my articles of online marketing and work from home ideas?

    • You can if they’re relevant. Make sure that the links have something to do with the content. If you’re going to do a lot with eBay, you might look into a plugin for WordPress called Phpbay. It makes it easy to build an eBay store on your site.

  3. Hi Charlie…love reading your posts.
Even I am thinking to start an online blog/website.
I wanna ask if I can combine Internet Marketing with Affiliate Marketing and give product reviews(from kitchen appliances, gaming apps, drones,
to websites and digital media, etc) as well??
I am very much interested in above topics.
    Whats your say?

    • You can do that, but it’s best to build one Website around one niche or product. Build a site about drones. Or a site about kitchen appliances. But don’t build one that’s about both drones and kitchen appliances.

It’s best to make your site about one thing. If you want to cover another niche, build a second site.

  4. Charlie,
I am new to creating a blog or a website and I want to monetize it.I have the plan as-

Buying domain>Selecting and Researching on niche and creating more and more pages>Driving traffic>contacting Affiliates and Advertizing on approval

is this the right order to follow?
Can we contact affiliates first and then think of ranking on search engines?
Do you have any more suggestions to improve on this?

    • Find a niche.
      Buy a domain.
      Work on content.

Don’t get in a hurry to monetize. Unless you’re buying traffic through Bing or Google ads, it’s going to take a while for traffic to come to your site, so it won’t matter if you’re monetized or not early on. Some affiliates want to see your site before approving you, so it’s best to have a fully realized site first.

  5. What are the minimum requirements to be an Amazon affiliate? is creation of one page enough to become an affiliate??

How is Alibaba or AliExpress affiliate program???

    • I’m not sure exactly what Amazon’s requirements are. I had a well-developed site before I ever applied to the program. I don’t think a one-page site will do it. I’d built out a site with 5-10 pages of content, an “About Us” page, a “Contact” page, a “Privacy Policy” page for starters. I’d have 500-1000 words per page of content, along with some photos or graphics.

There are plenty of places that can do the work for hire if you’re not up to it. You’ll get a better response from Amazon if your site looks informative and professional.

        • I’ve heard good things about Alibaba, but have no experience with them. I’ve been a CJ affiliate for years, but haven’t had much luck with their products. I do OK with Amazon and Shareasale. No experience with Viglinks.

    • My blog is built on WordPress. The built-in text editor has a button for adding a link. You just click it and it opens a window and you paste the link there.

I use the Pretty Link Lite plugin to make ugly affiliate links look more presentable.

    • I don’t know. I’ll be honest – I hate Facebook. I don’t use it personally, though I do have a couple of pages there for Websites such as this one. I visit about once a week and only do so to mention new reviews that I’ve written.

I don’t spend anything on ads there because I’ve personally never had any luck with them. Other people spend thousands of dollars a month. While I think it can be beneficial, I don’t think it’s necessary.

      • how do you drive traffic to your websites and which is the best way for keyword research???…Please help me as i wanna rank better on Google.

        • For keyword research, I either use the Google Keyword Planner or Jaaxy. Jaaxy is great for finding keywords that are easy to rank for.

Otherwise, I get all of my traffic via SEO:

1000+ words of content per page
Keyword in H1, H2, H3 tags once per page
Keyword in bold once, italics once, underlined once
Keyword once in a link to another page on my site
Keyword once in a link to a page on an external site
Create lots of pages just like that. And be patient.

That’s pretty much all I do. I have lots of pages on various sites ranking on page one of Google.

  6. nice review…i have 2 doubts-
1- if i join as a free member and i post my main affiliate link in my blog, will i earn half the commission as that of Premium ones?
2- i am able to see 4 links in my WA affiliate area- Main link, Premium promo, create account link and site rubix link…
What are they each for and how do i use them individually?

    • Commissions earned by free members are roughly $11 per new member. It’s $22.50 for paid memberships.

The main link sends people to the WA home page. The Premium promo link sends people to a page where they can sign up for a discounted paid membership (first month is $19, I think.)
Create account link takes them directly to a page where they can join.
Site Rubix link promotes Wealthy Affiliate’s Web hosting program, which is included in a WA membership.

I just use the main link for everything.
